Spring Swing Softball Tournament kicks off at Superior Dome in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Spring is back in the U.P., and with it brings some early action on the softball diamond for high school teams at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

The 2024 Spring Swing Softball Tournament kicked off Friday afternoon at the Dome, featuring 17 high school teams from around the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin.

“We all get together and it’s a competitive tournament. A lot of teams use it as their preseason scrimmages that they’re allowed to use,” said Marquette Softball Head Coach Derek Swajanen. “It’s good to get together, obviously, with the weather outside. It’s nice and warm and toasty in here, so it’s a great day for softball today.”

After spending the winter months practicing indoors, for many teams the tournament is their first taste of live action for the season and allows them to get ready for the regular season just around the corner.

“I think it’s a lot of evaluation and seeing where they want to put those puzzle pieces during the regular season, lot of discussions regarding that,” Swajanen said. “We’re just looking to work on our bunt coverages, our first and third defenses, base running, those types of things that we’ve worked on in practice, but now you get to do it on a live game”

Scheduled games run from 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, and pick back up Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m until 8 p.m. Admission for kids under five is free, and for eveyone else costs $10 Friday and $15 on Saturday.

Merchandise is also available as part of a fundraising effort for Marquette softball.
