Spring cleaning: CTA to begin repairs, improvements at some rail stations, bus turnarounds

CHICAGO — Spring is quickly approaching and that means it is time for cleanups and repairs to begin at CTA rail stations and bus turnarounds.

The CTA announced Monday that crews will begin repairs and improvements at some rail stations and bus turnarounds in the spring of 2024, as part of its ongoing, cyclical station improvement program “Refresh & Renew.”

The Refresh & Renew program, which started in 2019, works to keep stations in a state of good repair.

Crews will be focusing on 13 rail stations across five lines and three bus turnarounds through the end of May.

The CTA provided the following list of rail stations and turnarounds that will see cleanups and improvements this spring:

  • Red Line stops: Sox-35th, Addison, Thorndale, Granville, Howard

  • Blue Line stops: Chicago

  • Green Line stops: 35th -Bronzeville-IIT, Ashland, Conservatory, King Drive

  • Brown Line stops: Armitage

  • Orange Line stops: Pulaski, Ashland

  • Bus Turnarounds: 95th/Ashland, Milwaukee/Imlay, Addison/Pontiac

According to the CTA, crews will perform an estimated $6.5 million in repairs and maintenance throughout the year.

But before the work begins, crews will conduct an inspection of each station to identify what may need repair or replacement.

Refresh & Renew work will continue through 2024, but the specific stations that will receive improvements during the summer and fall will be announced at a later date, the CTA said.

“Our riders deserve clean, comfortable stations and the Refresh & Renew program is just one way we work to keep our facilities looking up-to-date throughout the system,” CTA President Dorval Carter, Jr. said. “Once a station is completed, customers will notice a cleaner, brighter station. But even after the work is complete, we have crews that continue to power wash and clean every day the weather allows.”

As part of the Refresh & Renew program, crews will complete more comprehensive improvements, including concrete repairs, removal of outdated fixtures and equipment, and utility and plumbing line repair. Smaller cosmetic upgrades and repairs to sheet metal and damaged signage, lighting, and surfaces will are also performed.
