SouthWest Mobile County Chamber offers mentorship program for High School Seniors

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — There’s one more day to apply for a special mentorship program for Mobile County High School Seniors. The program helps mold young leaders by giving them on-the-job experience.

For more than a decade the chamber has put together a program for seniors called “Tall” Tillman’s Corner Area Learning Leadership.

I spoke with some of the graduates of this year’s program, today is the last day to apply for next year’s program. TALL is for seniors in the 2024 -2025 school year with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
They’ll select about a dozen students from public, private and home schooled kids in Mobile County.

The students help organize chamber events, visit Montgomery and local government officials.
They also work with local business leaders writing resumes, working on budgets and other projects. Organizers say it’s a chance to work on their feet and give back to the community.
Students say they’ve gotten the chance to meet kids from different walks of life from around our region.

“It’s a training process for individuals to get them to love their community, to come to work together. It’s a diverse group of young people from different schools and just trying to cultivate their relationships, to be able to work with individuals, but have a love for the community and be impactful,” said Chamber Director Tina Poiroux. Students say it gives them a chance to see different parts of Mobile County, meet new friends and gain new confidence.

“I think I’ve just been able to interact with older people as I’ve been able to talk to grown ups more often and just be able to like put myself out there,” said Baker High School Senior Campbell Wysong.

Today at 5 is the deadline to apply. Selections will be made in June. Not only does this improve confidence, they say some get mentors that follow them for years and some have gotten hired from their work here. You can find a link to the application here.
