South Charlotte church employee charged with embezzlement

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A south Charlotte church employee has been accused of stealing from the chapel, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Court documents state Oscar Emmanual Ehighalua, 56, of Charlotte, has been charged with felony embezzlement. The date of the offense occurred on Feb. 25, 2024.

Records state Ehighalua “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did, with the intent to embezzle and fraudulently and knowingly misapply and convert to his own use, take and make away with stolen U.S. currency, belonging to St. Matthew Catholic Church.”

At the time of the theft, Ehighalua was an employee of the church and had been entrusted to receive the cash before he reportedly took it for his own use.

CMPD’s police report indicates $100 was stolen from the church.

St. Matthew Catholic Church is located along Ballantyne Commons Pkwy in south Charlotte.

Mecklenburg County jail records show Ehighalua was booked on Friday, March 22.
