Music fans suffered an incredible loss this morning, when it was reported that Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell passed away. The singer was only 52.

Cornell was found unresponsive at the MGM Grand Detroit Hotel after playing a show last night. According to his representative Brian Bumbery, the death was “sudden and unexpected.” Bumbery also said that Cornell’s family would be working with a medical examiner to find out more about his sudden death.

As a musician, Cornell was a big figure in the grunge scene. Coming out of Seattle, his band Soundgarden hit it big with songs like “Black Hole Sun,” which was all over the radio in the early ’90s.

A few celebrities, as well as fellow musicians and bands, are already paying their respects through Twitter.

Here are just a few of the beautiful words that have been said so far.

While the tragic death is being labeled as an “apparent suicide,” the exact cause is still officially unconfirmed at the time.

The night before his death, Cornell was playing what would be his last show with the band Soundgarden, who reunited back in 2010 after several years apart. One fan took video of the frontman singing his hit song “Spoonman” one final time.

We’re so sorry to hear about such a tragic loss, and wish nothing but peace for Cornell’s friends and family.
