‘My son knows not to shoot at police.’ Mother of teen killed in shootout believes son didn’t kill MPD officer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mother of Jaylen Lobley, who was killed in the shootout that also killed Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney, says she feels her son did not fire the fatal shots.

MPD officer may have been killed by ‘friendly fire,’ D.A.’s office says

Lobley, who was 18, was named as a suspect after McKinney was shot to death last Friday. WREG reached out to Lobley’s family after learning Lobley had earlier been released on his own recognizance, with only a curfew.

The revelation late Wednesday that McKinney may have been mistakenly shot by his fellow officers sent WREG back to Lobley’s home. His mother was there.

“I know he didn’t shoot the officer in the first place,” she told WREG. “I knew that in the first place. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that. My son knows not to shoot at the police.”

The Memphis Police Department, the Shelby County District’s Attorney, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have not released more information on exactly what happened the night of the shooting. It’s also not known if the other officers hit were also struck by friendly fire.

Court documents identify teen in officer’s shooting

The D.A.’s office says the 17-year-old with Lobely that night is facing 13 different attempted murder charges since 13 officers were on the scene.

WREG asked Lobely’s mother if the police had spoken with her.

“No one came to talk to me,” she said.

The 17-year-old, who sources have identified as Devaron Taylor, remains in the hospital.
