‘Somebody could’ve gotten hit’: Video captures attempted street race in Downtown Pittsburgh

A dangerous joyride in Downtown Pittsburgh Saturday night was caught on camera.

While cars were doing burnouts and donuts in the middle of a busy intersection, someone caught the chaos on camera.

“I grew up in the country… that’s different because you’re not putting anyone at risk, but no, not here,” said downtown resident Amy Smith.

The video has been circulating online over the last 48 hours, and it’s been shared hundreds of times.

Pittsburgh police say the car caught on video was one of 50 that showed up to street race that night.

Not long after — officers arrived, and surrounded them — but all of the drivers sped off.

As one car left, it crashed through security fencing and barricades that were set up for the Pittsburgh Marathon — which was just a few hours later the next morning.

“It’s a shame, and I say it’s too bad they couldn’t catch the guy that was doing it. He wasn’t driving safely, he could have hit someone or caused a vehicle accident,” Benita Morris said.

Last summer, Channel 11 told you about another time dozens of vehicles showed up on the Fort Pitt Bridge, doing burnouts, after high-speed drag racing near the airport. In that case, Jason Stotlemeyer was charged — after police said he was a driver and hit a police car as he tried to speed off away from investigators.

“Somebody could have gotten hit. Somebody’s car could have gotten banged up. It could have been worse,” Smith said.

In this weekend’s incident — at this point, no one has been charged.
