Soldiers Field east playground temporarily closed starting April 1

Mar. 29—ROCHESTER — The east playground at Soldiers Field Memorial Park will be closed starting Monday, April 1.

While the playground is closed, construction fencing will be used to secure the site for the installation of new playground equipment. The closure is expected to last until May 15.

"With safety as a top priority, we appreciate the community's understanding of this temporary closure. The progress being made with the improvements and new additions is exciting and we are eager to complete each of them," Mike Nigbur, Parks and Forestry Division Head, said in a statement.

The new playground is

part of the $22 million project at Soldiers Field,

which includes creating a riverwalk on the northeast section of the park, adding basketball courts, creating a new picnic area and nature play area on the west side of the park, and connecting trails at the southwest corner of the park. A

new aquatics center

at the park is slated to open in summer 2024. The project is funded through the local park referendum, the Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency, state grants and federal grants, according to the Parks and Recreation Department.
