Soggy end of work week with abundant April showers

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Hey there, Utah! Active weather will continue Friday as a second wave of energy moves into the state.

Bottom Line?! A strong spring storm moving in today will keep showers in the forecast for the weekend.

Today’s storm system will bring scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms to the entire state with high-elevation snowfall. Our low-pressure system is sliding down out of the Gulf of Alaska and, as a result, will bring in much cooler air with it.

Snow levels will likely drop to and remain near 7,000 feet as active weather will carry over into the weekend with the heaviest snowfall above 8,000 feet. Temperatures across the state will drop significantly from what we’ve seen over the past few days. Daytime highs will reach the low to mid 50’s for the Wasatch Front while southern Utah will see temperatures fall into the 60s.

The low-pressure system will slowly rotate through the Great Basin Friday and Saturday with some of the heaviest precipitation expected today through early Saturday. A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Wasatch Mountains south of I-80 and the Western Uintas. Heavy snowfall of roughly 8-16″ is expected for these areas with most of Utah’s mountains seeing roughly 6-12″ during the event.

The weather advisory will continue through early Sunday as moisture will linger as the trough exits east on Sunday.  The valleys will see a good amount of rain as well, most areas could pick up 0.50-1.00″ or more of precipitation through Saturday with scattered showers expected.

Temperatures will remain 5-10 degrees cooler than normal for Saturday with a gradual warmup taking shape as we slide into next week. By Monday, temperatures bounce back to slightly above seasonal averages with another spike in temperatures through midweek. Daytime highs are expected to approach 80 degrees along the Wasatch Front while in St. George, high temperatures will be in the upper 80s.

We’ll keep tracking the trajectory of the incoming storms and give you the latest developments. Until then enjoy the nice weather and stay up-to-date on the latest in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
