O.J. Simpson, an American football star and actor who was acquitted of double murder charges, died at age 76.
Referred to as "the trial of the century" Simpson's 1995 case was cleared by a Los Angeles jury for allegations of stabbing his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman resulting in their death.
Simpson was one of the most well-known athletes of the late 1960s and 1970s. He broke into college football playing for the University of Southern California. Also known as "The Juice," Simpson went on to have a record-setting career in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and San Franciso 49ers. He was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Simpson died from prostate cancer Wednesday, according to a social media post from his family on Thursday.

While Simpson was never found guilty in criminal court, he was liable in civil.
The Goldman and Brown families subsequently pursued a wrongful death lawsuit against Simpson in civil court. In 1997, a predominately white jury in Santa Monica, California, found Simpson liable for the two deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages.
