Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum announces solar eclipse events, resources

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — With the 2024 solar eclipse just around the corner, the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum announced resources and activities that it would offer around the time of the celestial event.

The Smithsonian said that the solar eclipse will take place on April 8. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contingent United States for over 20 years.

Starting in late March, the Smithsonian will hand out limited numbers of solar eclipse glasses. You can pick them up from the National Air and Space Museum in D.C. or from the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

The Smithsonian said that more details about the glasses will be available on its website on March 15.

The National Air and Space Museum will also host its “Solar Eclipse Festival on the National Mall” in D.C. on April 8. The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. and will feature activity stations and a variety of telescopes you can safely view the eclipse through.

A limited number of solar eclipse glasses will also be available during this event.

Will the total eclipse affect migrating birds?

You can also head to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center between 2 and 4 p.m. on April 8 to see the eclipse through safe solar telescopes.
