Small earthquake hits near Charlotte; 12 quake recorded in NC this year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WNCN) — A small earthquake was detected in North Carolina on Monday morning just miles away from Charlotte.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude quake happened just before 2:45 a.m. on Monday about 6.5 miles WSW of Charlotte.

The quake was about 3 miles deep and is the 12th recorded earthquake this year in North Carolina. A number of small earthquakes have been recorded in the western part of the state near Bryson City.
