To skim or not to skim: Annual event coming back to Camelback

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— You may be seeing more green on ski slopes in our area as the snow starts to melt, but for one event happening Saturday, that’s a good thing.

28/22 News Reporter Sydney Kostus has more from Camelback Resort in Tannersville about its 19th Annual Pond Skim.

The month of March is here, and at Camelback Resort in Tannersville, everyone’s has one question: To skim or not to skim?

“I will think about doing it,” said Molly Coneybeer, Marketing Director at Camelback Resort.

28/22 News stopped by the resort to speak with Coneybeer as the mountain prepares for Saturday’s 19th Annual Pond Skim, an event that challenges skiers and snowboarders to skim across a makeshift pond.

Getting judged on performance, every rider gets a chance to win a prize.

“Someone with the best costume, someone with the best splash, and the best skim so at least one of those you do have to make it across the pond to be eligible for the best skim, but other than that you can just dress goofy and go have some fun and maybe win a free season pass for next year,” Coneybeer explained.

Some make it look easy, but skimming across a 90-foot long, 4-foot deep body of water is no easy feat.

While many people think the annual pond skim event wraps up the season, there’s still plenty of spring skiing to go around.

“We still have tons of slopes and trails open. Conditions are abnormally great even despite the warm temperatures and the little bit of rain that we got, and it’s great the snow is soft, the crowds are way smaller even on weekends,” Coneybeer told 28/22 News.

This year marked a milestone at the mountain, as it rang in its 60th season.

Coneybeer says they reflected on the generation growth of its riders and the slopes.

“Camelback started in 1963 as a ski resort, and not even as big as it is now. And it’s just really interesting and cool to see how the Poconos have grown in the past 60 years and how camelback has adapted to that as well,” Coneybeer added.

The in-person registration for Camelback’s pond skim begins at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

The pond skim event starts at 11:00 a.m. and will end with a celebration at Camelback’s Thirsty Camel Restaurant.

For the second year in a row, 28/22 News Reporter Sydney Kostus will be a celebrity judge.
