YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– The massive six-alarm fire that ripped through an empty factory in York County is almost completely out, and it may be a while until investigators can figure out a cause.

All that burns yet from the fire that broke out Saturday, April 27, at the old furniture factory on Mill Road is one small hotspot near the front left corner of the building, Eureka Fire Chief Todd Gibney wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Gibney is continuing to urge people to NOT call 911, writing that the hotspot does put off a little smoke now and then, and firefighters are still monitoring the site making sure that the brick/block walls will prevent the fire from going anywhere.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown, Gibney wrote, and is still under investigation by a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, and it may take a while as investigators continue to look at every single possible cause to determine the fire’s origin.

Police are asking anyone in the area with video to look for suspicious activity between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The first call for the fire, the largest in Stewartstown Borough’s history that dates back to 1767 and also one of the largest in York County’s history, came in before 2 a.m. Crews determined there was a fire coming from the back of the vacant Stewartstown Furniture Factory.

Due to the possibility of the vacant three-story, almost 250,000 square feet, building catching fire, Eureka firefighters already had a plan in place, a 13-page “Pre-Plan”. An 8″ pipe was installed at the large pond on Piston Court to allow fire engines to pump water from the pond in the event of a large fire in the town.

The blaze that continued to leave lingering hot spots for multiple days was so large that embers were falling three miles away from the fire scene.

There were no injuries from the fire and one home had minor damage.

Plans for the vacant building were to turn it into luxury apartments however the building’s owner has said that the project is going to change.
