Sinkhole forms on SR-54 ahead of morning commute

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A sinkhole opened on westbound State Route 54 near Chula Vista and National City Monday morning, prompting closures to the roadway for an “undetermined amount of time.”

According to California Highway Patrol logs, the sinkhole was first reported around 2:48 a.m. near the interconnector with both northbound and southbound Interstate 805. A hard closure to the off-ramp has been put in place.

What caused the sinkhole to form is unknown at this time. However, CHP requested storm water personnel to inspect it.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, the westbound connector was reopened following emergency repairs, according to Caltrans.
