Sick and Tired bus tour pushes for better healthcare access

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A multi-city bus tour to promote healthcare access legislation kicked off in Whitehaven on Friday.

The Sick and Tired bus tour is a joint venture between the groups Black Voters Matter and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network.

Friday’s event at Abyssinian Baptist Church featured a health fair and film screening, highlighting people caught in the coveragve gap, meaning they earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.

The tour is calling for Medicaid expansion in the last remaining 10 holdout states, mostly in the South, including Tennessee and Mississippi.

“We are still in a state of emergency that disproportionately impacts Black, Southern, and rural communities,” said LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter Fund.

The tour is scheduled for stops in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
