Ship sinking, leaking diesel fuel and oil into the California Delta

(FOX40.COM) — A historic ship that has been docked in the California Delta for years is sinking and leaking diesel fuel and oil into the waterway, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

The agency said on Wednesday morning that the ship, named the “Aurora,” has “suffered a hole and is taking on water.”

Why doesn’t the Delta King Hotel move from its place on the Sacramento River?

The sheriff’s office said its Boating Safety Unit and other teams are coordinating efforts to contain the spill.

The ship is located near the intersection of Empire Tract Road and Eight Mile Road, northwest of Stockton.

According to a teaser trailer for a documentary about the restoration of the ship, the Aurora is a 293-foot cruise ship that was built in Germany in 1955 and was originally named the “Wappen von Hamburg.”

The ship is reportedly the inspiration for “The Love Boat” and made appearances in the movie “From Russia With Love,” as well as the TV show “Baywatch.”

After decades of service in different capacities, the ship was purchased by its current owner in 2008 from Craigslist.
