Sheriff’s office confirms investigation is underway for deputies accused of shooting cat as target practice

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Sheriff’s Office confirms an investigation has been launched after its deputies are being accused of shooting a cat as target practice.

While the woman didn’t capture the actual shooting on video, she did record her confrontation with the three men involved.

Sheriff Youngblood told 17 News his office is investigating the alleged shooting that happened at the Hart Park shooting range two weeks ago. In an email, Youngblood said his office is looking to see if a crime has been committed.

The Sheriff said he has no estimate on when the investigation may be completed.

The woman who recorded the video confronted the three men dressed in tactical gear.

The woman, who chose not to be identified, said: “What are you guys doing to the cat? You just shot it?”

One man responded: “It was damaging the property.”

“Damaging the property, a cat? And now, you’re not going to put it out of its misery? If you’re doing what’s legal then tell me what your names are. You should feel ashamed of yourselves!”

The woman posted the video on social media and said she filed a complaint with the Internal Affairs Office.
