Sheriff: Four alcohol & tobacco establishments in Wisconsin fail compliance checks, ‘substantial’ amount of product seized

(WFRV) – Authorities in western Wisconsin announced that over 20 compliance checks were conducted, and four businesses allegedly failed them for selling products to underage people.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page about recent compliance checks that were done on alcohol and tobacco establishments. This operation was conducted to make sure products were not sold to underage people, according to authorities.

22 locations were checked and four businesses reportedly failed them for county ordinance violations. Below is a breakdown of the businesses that allegedly failed the checks:

  • Village Tobacco Shop, Rice Lake

    • Allegedly sold tobacco/THC product to underage subject

  • Stump Lake Liquor, Rice Lake

    • Allegedly sold tobacco to underage subject

  • Guilty Vibez, Barron

    • Allegedly sold THC vape to underage subject

  • Ben and Maggie’s Town pump, Cameron

    • Allegedly served alcohol to underage subject

Officials say that Ben and Maggie’s also did not have a licensed bartender and illegally got alcohol from a non-licensed source on the premises. It was reportedly closed down for the night by Wisconsin Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement.

The post also claims that Guilty Vibez at the Barron and Turtle Lake locations were temporarily closed for inspection. A ‘substantial’ amount of product was reportedly seized for:

  • Unauthorized transfer of cigarette/tobacco/vape products from one retail to another

  • Un-invoiced tobacco products

  • Obtaining untaxed vapor products from unauthorized source

Authorities also identified the other 18 locations that passed the alcohol/tobacco checks.

We are very pleased that a majority of our establishments passed our checks. We will work with the failed establishments on education efforts to make sure they understand the dangers of selling to our youth. It is everyone’s job across the county to keep our kids safe and with five proms and several other summer events around the corner this is a good reminder that together we can keep our kids safe.

Authorities say that they will continue to work with local police departments, state agencies and other partners over the summer on other prevention efforts.
