Shakespeare, NHS, model UN: Meet your Student of the Week, April 15-19

Student of the Week offers schools the chance to celebrate teens who have placed in an art, dance or music competition, excelled in a science fair, won an essay contest, received a scholarship, were recognized for their volunteer service or have shined in some other way.

All high schools in Arizona are invited to nominate students to be included in an online poll where azcentral.com readers vote to choose the Student of the Week.

Student of the Week voting is open from 6 a.m. Monday through noon Thursday. Each week's winner is announced online Friday at 6 a.m.

Meet this week's Student of the Week, Avery Larsen, a senior at Basha High School, and the nominees!

Avery Larsen, senior, Basha High School

Avery Larsen will be leaving on April 12 as one of Arizona's two representatives to the English-Speaking Union's 2024 Shakespeare Monologue Competition to be held at Lincoln Center in New York City. She represented her school at the Eastern Arizona Festival of Theatre, where she qualified for the national competition in several events. Avery is an accomplished student who will receive recognition for her high academic achievements as a Thespian Scholar this year when she is awarded her graduation honors. She is the president of the International Thespian Society and a second-year member of the Basha Theatre Company. Additionally, for the past four years, Avery has mentored the younger students as they progressed through the theater program.

Tzintzuni Hernandez, junior, Glendale High School

Tzintzuni Hernandez, or “T,” is one of the top students at Glendale High School. She is the starting center fielder and has been there since her freshman year. She is a captain on the softball team and she is a leader on campus as part of the Student Leadership Advisory Council and National Honor Society. In the fall, she played for the Glendale High School Volleyball team and is consistently giving her free time to help friends and the community in Glendale. T is a great example of a Glendale High School student being the best that she can be.

Sascha Reverón, sophomore, BASIS Mesa

Sascha Reverón was selected as Miss Juneteenth Arizona 2023/2024 and has been able to use her role as a pageant queen to promote her platform of getting people civically engaged. Sascha also started TEENgage, a youth summit for political engagement to empower and educate youth, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to become future leaders and changemakers in their communities. At school, Sascha is the co-president of the Model United Nations Club, secretary of the National Honors Society and an officer of the Student Ambassador’s program. She created a Multicultural Coalition at BASIS Mesa to celebrate rich cultural backgrounds and foster unity.
