These severe weather shelters, warming centers to open for Thursday’s storm

DENVER (KDVR) — The Pinpoint Weather team is looking at potentially a foot of snow to accumulate in Colorado by the end of the workweek. In response, the city of Denver is opening more shelters and warming centers for the incoming cold.

Denver is expecting a change as soon as Wednesday night. It will start with rain, which will turn into snow overnight. Thursday is expected to have most of the winter weather, with some snow heading into Friday morning.

Due to the expected winter weather, Denver is opening up severe weather shelters and warming centers from Wednesday to Saturday.

Severe weather shelters open

Denver Department of Housing Stability announced it will open severe weather shelters from 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, to 9 a.m. Saturday, March 16.

People experiencing homelessness should walk up to the locations directly. These locations include:

  • McNichols Civic Center Building, 144 W. Colfax Ave.

  • The Stone Creek Shelter (former Best Western hotel), 4595 Quebec St. – this shelter is accepting pets

How much snow is expected to fall during Thursday’s storm?

The city is also expanding its “front door” shelter access capacity for the cold.

  • Individual men – Lawrence Street Community Center,
    2222 Lawrence St.

  • Individual women – Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St.

  • Youth ages 15-20 – Urban Peak, 2100 Stout St.

  • Families in need of shelter should call the Connection Center at 303-295-3366

Warming centers open

Due to the storm’s impact, Denver is also opening up warming centers during the day.

All currently operating recreation centers will open as warming centers during daytime hours on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15.

  • Denver Parks and Recreation will open all currently operating recreation centers as daytime warming centers during regular business hours on Thursday and Friday

  • Although they’re not usually warming centers, open Denver Public Library locations are available to the public as a place to warm up during the cold

  • The Red Cross opened several locations as well:

    • Douglas County Fairgrounds – Kirk Hall, 500 Fairgrounds Rd., Castle Rock

      • Opens at 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 14

    • Fox Ridge Middle School – 26301 E. Arapahoe Rd., Aurora

      • Opens at 7 a.m. on March 14 and on March 15

    • St. Peter Catholic Church – 55 Jefferson St., Monument

      • Warming center with water and snacks, opens at 7 p.m. Thursday

    • Goal High School – 11990 Swingline Road, Falcon

      • Warming center with water and snacks, opens at 7 p.m. Thursday
