Tornado warnings expire in Sampson, Cumberland counties

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Amid heavy rain and a flash flood warning for Wake County on Tuesday evening, tornado warnings were issued for part of Cumberland County and an hour later in Sampson County, the National Weather Service said.

The Sampson County warning — like the earlier one in southern Cumberland County — was allowed to expire at a time that was designated by the weather service. With Sampson County that was 8:15 p.m. and Cumberland County that was 7:15 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for central Sampson County and southeastern Cumberland County, officials said.

The severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 7:17 p.m. It also expired at 8:15 p.m.

Officials said to be on the lookout for 60-mile-per-hour winds, as well as expect damage to roofs, siding and trees.

Earlier in the evening, a tornado warning was issued at 6:32 p.m. for Cumberland County after the weather service reported a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located two miles north of St. Pauls.

The storm was also 13 miles east of Red Springs, moving northeast at 35 mph.

The storm was expected to hit Fayetteville around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. The tornado warning expired at 7:15 p.m.

Other areas in the path of the storm included Eastover, Hope Mills, Vander, Stedman, and Cedar Creek.

“Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter,” the warning said. “Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.”

The National Weather Service said people inside buildings should move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. People were warned to avoid windows.
