Several sanitary sewer overflows caused by April 10 severe weather: MAWSS, MCHD

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Wednesday’s severe storm brought more than heavy rainfall — according to the Mobile County Health Department, the storms caused several sanitary sewer overflows.

Mobile Area Water & Sewer System responded to several sewer overflows in the Mobile area on April 10 that officials say were caused by “heavy rainfall.”

According to a press release, “MAWSS sewer system is designed to collect and convey wastewater to a MAWSS wastewater treatment plant. During heavy rains, storm water infiltrates and inundates aging sewer lines causing manholes to overflow.”

Along with the overflows from the rain, MAWSS responded to an overflow on Whitestone Drive that resulted from a break on a low-pressure force main. It is unclear what caused the break at this time. Officials say the water was contained and didn’t reach state waters.

“Area residents should take precautions when using Eslava Creek for recreational purposes because of these overflows. All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating. People should wash their hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.”

The above message was also sent out by the health department about all of the areas and bodies of water that received wastewater.
