‘He set a good example’: Slain CPD officer Luis Huesca remembered days before being laid to rest

CHICAGO — A fallen Chicago police officer continues to be remembered by those whose lives he touched.

Father Matt Foley of St. Gall Catholic Church in Gage Park has spent the week comforting the family of CPD officer Luis Huesca after he was killed on Sunday Morning.

“We did a rosary last night,” he said. “We’ve been meeting pretty much every day. His sister and brother are here from out of town, and his father is also.”

Father Foley told WGN News that Huesca became a police officer because his mother said he wanted to make a difference. Over the last few days, he has learned that Huesca was passionate about impacting young people.

“The people who’ve taken the bad road or bad decision, he really felt a heart for them to make a difference in their lives,” Foley said.

Huesca worked out of the 5th District Police Station and was assigned to the Priority Response Team. During his six-year career with CPD, he earned a department Commendation award, eight Honorable Mentions, three Physical Fitness awards, and a Crime Reduction award.

Plainfield East High School assistant principal Heather Boswell said she was not surprised that Huesca became a police officer because of his upbeat personality and eagerness to help. Huesca was part of the school’s first graduating class in 2011.

“I remember his smile,” Boswell said. “I remember his positive attitude and respectful manner; whenever he saw me, he would say hello.”

Huesca was in uniform when he was shot multiple times outside his home near 56th and Troy. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Police officials confirmed his death occurred in the line of duty as he was heading home from work when he was fatally shot.

For a young officer who left this world so tragically, Father Foley said he made the world a better place and will be remembered for the light he left behind.
