Senior in Richmond Co. gets special surprise from military brother during graduation

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- It’s a special day for Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School (RCTCM) graduating senior Ny’Ashia Bennett.

Bennett walked across the stage Thursday to receive her diploma and got a big surprise from her brother who’s being serving in the military.

“Oh it means a lot I’m all about family so I like being here for my family, missing out on a lot is kind of hard but being here for this big day it means a lot,” said Emyyous Finney, brother.

Bennett’s brother is stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas for the US Army. He decided to make it his mission to help celebrate his sister’s  big accomplishment in person.

“It means a lot my brother has been gone for a whole an I’ve missed him and I’ve been at TCM for a while so that plus having my brother back home it’s just a great day right now,” said Ny’Ashia Bennett.

This moment is one they won’t forget..

“My son didn’t get a chance to have a graduation so actually this is our first graduation due to COVID when he graduated so he didn’t get to walk. We had to drop him in the car so he didn’t get the experience and so with my daughter she was like well you act ain’t graduating, I’m like but it’s different when that was your first child and you let all your life up to see him graduate and he didn’t get that moment,” said Jimel Bennett, mother

And with the motivation from her family Bennett will soon move on to bigger things.

“I plan on going to Johnson and Wales in Charlotte ,North Carolina to study culinary and business. I plan on opening my own restaurant” said Bennett.
