Semper Solaris donates to the Warrior Foundation’s transitional housing project

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – The Warrior Foundation, spearheaded by former Marine Andrew Gasper, is at the forefront of transformative construction efforts in Freedom Station Three, transforming 1950s bungalows to serve as transitional housing for wounded warriors.

“Our freedom stations have an 18-to-24 month specific transitional housing program. It’s tailor-made to the individuals. We have a program of prevention, preventing them from being homeless,” Gasper stated.

The foundation’s mission extends beyond providing housing — it aims to connect wounded warriors with vital benefits, including VA health services and other opportunities.

“It’s never a cookie cutter thing, you have to meet them where they are at,” said Anthony Pone, a wounded warrior who helps other injured vets manage their emotional transitional lives into the civilian world.

For Pone, a former Army Corporal and wounded warrior, the Freedom Station serves as a lifeline during the transition to civilian life.

“Being in the military, you think you are going to be there your whole career, but then when something traumatic happens you have to pivot, which way do I go. The Freedom Station is instrumental in stepping in,” Pone remarked.

Former Marine Capt. Kelly Shawhan, owner of Semper Solaris, has played a crucial role in supporting the foundation’s efforts, contributing significantly to the roofing for the units.

“You know what, I can do this right now. Next week, I might need to sleep on your couch, but right now, I can do this,” Shawhan stated.

Sandy Lehmkuhler, the visionary founder of the Warrior Foundation, sees their work as a long-term commitment to those who have served.

“When they walk in the door, everything is provided for them, down to the place mats on their table, but we cannot do this without help,” Lehmkuhler emphasized.

Freedom Station Three represents more than just physical housing. It symbolizes a community dedicated to supporting transitioning servicemembers in their journey to civilian life.
