Semi truck crashes, spills gravel on I-70 in Wheat Ridge

DENVER (KDVR) — Gravel covered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 Friday afternoon after a tractor-trailer crashed near Kipling Street.

The Wheat Ridge Police Department said three lanes of eastbound I-70 were closed due to gravel spilled across the highway from the crash. The roadway has since been cleaned up and all lanes are open.

Police said two pickup trucks were also involved in the crash, but there were no major injuries reported.

According to WRPD, one pickup truck cut off the other pickup truck, causing it to spin out in front of the semi-trailer and causing the crash. The driver of the first pickup truck left the scene, according to police.

The semi-truck ended up overturned, which is when gravel spilled across the highway.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Arvada Fire Protection District were on the scene working to clean up debris. WRPD said CDOT brought in bulldozers for the clean up effort.

It took nearly three hours for crews to clear the roadway of 45,000 pounds of gravel, according to police.

WRPD said an investigation is underway.
