Semi-truck crash leaves Highway 166 littered with debris, forces closure at Highway 101

A semi-truck and a work truck crashed on Highway 166 outside of Santa Maria on Monday afternoon, blocking the road and forcing a closure, according to California Highway Patrol.

The trucks crashed at about 12:50 p.m., according to the CHP traffic incident report page.

The truck overturned and its trailer blocked the roadway, according to the CHP page. A reporting party said they smelled gas at the scene, and debris from the crash littered all lanes of the highway, according to the page.

As of 1:25 p.m., Caltrans was being asked to close Highway 166 at Highway 101 outside of Nipomo, according to CHP. Caltrans was also asked to add a soft closure sign at Bull Canyon.

An ambulance was on its way to the scene of the crash as of 1:40 p.m. According to the log, only minor injuries were reported.

A minor traffic backup was reported in the area of the Highway 101 and Highway 166 intersection as a result of the crash, according to the Caltrans QuickMap.
