In light of the #MeToo movement and the necessary culture shift in Hollywood, many stars are being held accountable for working with directors like Woody Allen, whose adopted daughter Dylan Farrow accused him of sexual abuse. Selena Gomez stars in his upcoming film, A Rainy Day in New York. Her mother, Mandy Teefey, now claims that she tried to talk to Gomez about “not working with him,” but suggests that Gomez ignored her advice.

When Teefey posted a tribute to the late Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan on Instagram, a fan left a comment on the photo asking her why Gomez has not apologized for working with Allen.

“Sorry, no one can make Selena do anything she doesn’t want to,” Teefey wrote in response to the fan. “I had a long talk with her about not working with him and it didn’t click. Her team are amazing people. There is no fall person here. No one controls her. She makes all her own decisions. No matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears.”

In December 2017, Gomez was asked in a Billboard interview what she thought about “Woody’s past” when she signed on to make the film. Gomez’s response left a lot to be desired.

“To be honest, I’m not sure how to answer — not because I’m trying to back away from it. [The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it. And that’s something, yes, I had to face and discuss,” Gomez told the publication. “I stepped back and thought, ‘Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.’”

Gomez stars in the film alongside Timothée Chalamet, who has already announced that he donated his salary from the film to several charities. There is a long list of actors involved in this film and so far, only Chalamet, Rebecca Hall, and Griffin Newman have expressed regret over appearing in the film.
