See The NYC Hospitals Ranked Best In The State

NEW YORK, NY — Hospitals in New York City fared well compared to upstate counterparts in the U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of the best hospitals in America. The publication evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals in the country across 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions to rank the best hospitals in America by region.

Eleven city hospitals made the list of the best hospitals in New York State, with some earning spots on the U.S. News & World Report's coveted "honor roll." The city's honor roll hospitals are New York Presbyterian's Columbia and Cornell campuses, NYU Langone and Mount Sinai Hospital. Those three hospitals were also named the top three in New York State.

In all, 158 hospitals in the country ranked nationally in at least one specialty and more than 1,100 hospitals were rated as high performing in at least one common procedure or condition, according to U.S. News. A total of 29 hospitals were rated as “high performing” in all nine procedures and conditions. Hospitals were not ranked numerically for procedures and conditions.

Among New York City's best hospitals, New York Presbyterian was ranked in 14 specialties and rated high performing in two procedures; NYU Langone was ranked in 12 specialties; Mount Sinai was ranked in 11 specialties and rated as high performing in two procedures; Lenox Hill was rated high performing in six procedures; Montefiore was ranked in one specialty and rated high performing in six procedures; Mount Sinai West was rated high performing in two procedures; Brooklyn Methodist Hospital was rated high performing in one procedure procedures and Staten Island University Hospital was rated high performing in one procedure.

Here are the city hospitals ranked the best in New York State:

  • New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell (1)

  • Mount Sinai Hospital (3)

  • Lenox Hill Hospital (T6)

  • Montefiore Medical Center (T6)

  • Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospitals (20)

  • NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (T26)

  • Staten Island University Hospital (T26)

  • Maimonides Medical Center (T30)

  • Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital (T30)

  • New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital (T32)

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was named the country’s best hospital. It was tops on an “honor roll” list of 20 hospitals noted for delivering “exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care.” The Minnesota hospital was ranked in 15 specialties and rated as “high performing” in one specialty. U.S News explains that a “high performing” rating means a hospital was not nationally ranked but was significantly better than average in a specialty.

U.S. News uses two methodologies, one for procedures and conditions ratings and another for specialty rankings. The rankings are produced by U.S. News with research organization, RTI International. U.S. News says its methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures like risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing.
