Ah, the music video. Once a vestige of past times, the medium has experienced a resurgence in recent years. And we can always expect it to receive the attention it deserves at the MTV Video Music Awards, airing live this Sunday, Aug. 28, from Madison Square Garden in New York City. As you might expect, the competition is fierce for the sought-after category of Video of the Year, so we gathered the five nominees for your viewing pleasure.

Adele -- "Hello"
The video for Adele's heartwrenching comeback hit nearly broke the internet with its million-plus views and countless spoofs, including one very memorable SNL sketch.
Beyonce -- "Formation"
Rife with political innuendo, badass choreography, and even a cameo from Blue Ivy, Queen B's surprise music video for "Formation" sent the Bey Hive into a tizzy in advance of her halftime show for Super Bowl 50. Click here for the full clip.
Drake -- "Hotline Bling"
Drake's colorfully lit visual treatment for "Hotline Bling," which featured four outfit changes and epic dance moves, inspired dozens of amusing memes and Halloween costumes.
Justin Bieber -- "Sorry"
Even though it doesn't feature The Biebs himself, the video for "Sorry" still amassed over a billion YouTube views, thanks in no small part to its fleet of talented dancers decked out in their nineties finest.
Kanye West -- "Famous"
Kanye West's performance art piece, which depicts nude wax figures of celebrities from Donald Trump to Taylor Swift, expectedly garnered a lot of attention. Not to mention that, in the beginning of the video, a voice clip saying, "Won a VMA Award" can be heard before the song begins. A harbinger, if there ever was one.
