Section of BQE closed for repairs this weekend

The BQE has a major project set to begin again with the closure of the busy roadway on Saturday morning.

Atlantic Avenue, which is a busy corridor through Downtown Brooklyn, will become a BQE detour

Drivers should plan for full closures on the Queens-bound BQE between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street from Saturday at 2 a.m. until Monday at 4 a.m., advises the city’s Department of Transportation.

The repairs will focus on adding new concrete and reinforcing steel bars near Clark Street and Grace Court, officials said. This weekend’s repairs will be followed by a final round expected on June 1 to 3.

Councilmember Lincoln Restler represents the area. He says drivers and neighbors need to know about another project on Sunday along the detour.

The NYC Department of Design and Construction will remove a parking lane and shift the regular traffic lanes for a block at Smith Street.

That department says a stage of work has to be done at the site and two lanes of traffic will remain open The parking lane is being temporarily removed only for Sunday.

“This weekend is going to be a nightmare on the streets of Brooklyn. We could not believe the agencies were not coordinating with one another one this,” said Councilmember Restler.

Commuters look to the subway or stay in their neighborhoods if they do not have to travel.

Here is a list of BQE ramp closures for this weekend:

  • 3rd Ave at 65th Street entrance ramp

  • 6th Ave at 65th Street entrance ramp

  • Prospect Expressway entrance ramp

  • Hamilton Avenue entrance ramp

  • Atlantic Avenue entrance ramp

  • Cadman Plaza exit ramp

  • Brooklyn Bridge exit ramp

  • Manhattan Bridge exit ramp

“Just as we did successfully last fall, we continue to deliver critical repairs to the BQE to preserve its lifespan while minimizing the impact on the local community,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “I encourage all New Yorkers to avoid the BQE in Brooklyn this weekend and to take mass transit.”

Traffic enforcement agents will be posted at key intersections along the detours to help drivers and pedestrians navigate the closures.
