Section of Blue Ridge Parkway to close through the summer for bridge repairs

NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Repairs that include masonry work on three historic Blue Ridge Parkway bridges near the Virginia-North Carolina state line are set to begin at the end of the month.

The National Park Service announced on Friday that the lengthy closures and detours can be expected for visitors and residents in the areas near mile marker 222 through mile marker 230 beginning Monday, January 29.

Stone masonry, bridge decks, and railing systems are all part of the project, and the project is expected to last until the fall, park officials said.

While both lanes will be closed in both directions, access to the nearby Fox Hunters Overlook will not be affected.

Road projects have already begun north of Sparta, NC, and with this new project set to launch, those detours will be extended to mile marker 217.3. The Doughton Park rec area, a campground, and Bluffs Restaurant will now only be accessible via NC 18 in the spring.

In addition to vehicles, the area is also being closed to bicycles and hikers.
