Authorities: Suspect considered ‘armed and dangerous’ taken into custody

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — A man authorities called “armed and dangerous” has been taken into custody without incident according to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

During the hours-long search for 32-year-old Robert Paul Rosell, Jr. authorities asked residents in the Gloucester area to shelter in place.

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday morning that Rosell was believed to be on foot in the Lowneyville Lane and Pinetta Road area.

Around 2:40 p.m., the sheriff’s office said they didn’t believe Rosell was still in that immediate area and that it wasn’t necessary for residents to continue to shelter in place.

“It should be noted that a weapon was recovered on scene that we believe was used during this incident, however this individual should still be considered dangerous and potentially armed,” the sheriff’s office said.

Bethel and Petworth Elementary schools and Peasley Middle School were placed on lockdown due to the incident. That shifted to “secure” mode, in which students are able to resume indoor activities like lunch.

The school district later announced the lifting of the secure status to allow for dismissal, and that all afternoon activities would proceed.

“This decision follows close collaboration with the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, and we appreciate their assistance throughout this process. We also extend our gratitude to parents and the community for their trust and patience,” the school district said.

Rosell was last seen in a white or green shirt and blue jeans, but potentially changed clothes, authorities said. He’s wanted on charges of brandishing a firearm and possession of firearm by convicted felon.
