Seacoast Science Center hosts World Ocean Day event: Here's what's planned

RYE — Seacoast Science Center will host its annual World Ocean Day Celebration on Sunday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers say the event is an opportunity for families to have an exciting, shared learning experience focused on the important role the ocean plays in everyday life.

Environmental partners will host learning stations teaching about life in and around the ocean.

Hands-on activities will be offered by Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, Educational Passages, Bruce Iverson (fish printing), The Gundalow Company and Hidden Coast Shellfish (local oyster farm).

Also participating are the Indigenous New Hampshire Collaborative Collective, NH Sea Grant (NH Green Crab Project), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth Scuba, Seacoast NH Climate Action Now (CAN), Shoals Marine Laboratory, SSC Marine Mammal Rescue, SurfRider Foundation NH Chapter and UNH Coastal Marine Laboratory.

Seacoast Science Center Marine Science Fellowship students will showcase their research projects from the past semester during a poster session, held from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Naturalist-led tide pooling exploration will be offered between 12 and 2 p.m. Sign up at the event to participate; space is limited, and sign-up is first come, first served.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can walk through the Blue Ocean Society’s life-size inflatable whale Ladder and learn how baleen whales eat and digest their food from an inside view. You can also take action to promote a healthy coastal and ocean environment between 12:30 and 2 p.m. by taking part in a DYI beach cleanup presented by the Blue Ocean Society.

Pressed for Time Mobile Café and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream will be on-site for lunch and snacks. Please help keep this event Zero Waste and bring refillable water bottles (filtered refill station on-site) and snacks in recyclable or reusable containers.

Admission to the World Ocean Day Celebration is $5 for Seacoast Science Center members, $20 for non-member adults, and $15 for children (under age 3 are free). Your ticket purchase also includes admission to Odiorne Point State Park. Carpooling is encouraged for the health of our ocean.
