SDG&E customers will get a break on some bills this year. Here’s why

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Gas & Electric customers are getting a break on their April and October energy bills this year, the utility company announced Monday.

Residential SDG&E customers will see a $78.22 credit on their statement in April. Customers with natural gas will also receive a $58.98 credit on the same statement, according to SDG&E.

Then, this October, SDG&E residential customers with electric service will see a second credit applied to their billing statement.

The utility company says the 2024 bill credits for customers will total over $200.

There is no action required to receive the credits. SDG&E says all gas and electricity customers will automatically receive the first set of credits in their upcoming bill. Customers will also be notified by email.

“We appreciate working collaboratively with the California Public Utilities Commission to distribute the Climate Credit and offer some financial relief to our customers,” said SDG&E Vice President of Customer Services Dana Golan. “Anyone struggling to pay their bill is encouraged to reach out to us. We’re here to help connect them with financial assistance programs.”

The energy bill savings is thanks to the California Climate Credit program, which is part of the Golden State’s efforts to fight climate change, administered by the California Public Utilities Commission. This credit comes from the state’s Cap-and-Trade Program, which requires power plants, fuel providers, and large industrial facilities that emit greenhouse gases to buy carbon pollution allowances.

SDG&E says the credits are typically distributed twice a year and represent customers’ share of the benefits from the state’s Cap-and-Trade program.
