It’s no secret that owning a pet can do wonders for people’s health. Seriously, just seeing our pet’s cutie little face at the end of a long workday or a good old fashioned couch-snuggle-sesh relieves SO much stress for us!

So is it any wonder that science has actually proved that the key to a dog owner’s longevity is simply walking your pup?

That’s right!

Researchers at The University of Missouri found that adults over 60 benefit from daily walks with their pups — so much, in fact, that it can help them live longer, healthier lives.

Rebecca Johnson, a professor at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine and the Millsap Professor of Gerontological Nursing in the Sinclair School of Nursing, said of the research:

“Our results showed that dog ownership and walking were related to increases in physical health among older adults. These results can provide the basis for medical professionals to recommend pet ownership for older adults and can be translated into reduced health care expenditures for the aging population.”

And just because the study focused on older adults over 60 doesn’t mean that millennials and people of all ages can’t benefit from taking their pets for a leisurely stroll!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention actually recommends “that adults of all ages should engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week,” and what better way to get that number in than taking little Fido for an adventure around the neighborhood?
