Schuylkill County Memorial Day weekend events

The following services are scheduled in and around Schuylkill County on Memorial Day weekend.

Sunday, May 26

Concert

• 7 p.m., St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 215 N. Warren St., Orwigsburg. Freewill offerings accepted. Open to public. Featuring Patriotic Festival Choir and St. Paul’s Handbell Choir.

Service

• 2 p.m., Fort Indiantown Gap. At U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, rain or shine. Program will be held in the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial. Parking will be at MSC Industrial Supply Co., 100 MSC Drive, Jonestown, just east of Fort Indiantown Gap. Shuttle bus transportation will begin running at noon.

Monday, May 27

Concert

• 6 to 8 p.m., M&J Big Band, Large Pavilion by the Sweet Arrow Lake Clubhouse, Pine Grove. Free. Bring chair. Sweet Arrow Arts in the Park Program sponsored by the Sweet Arrow Lake Conservation Association.

Parades

• 9 a.m., Hamburg. Line up at War Memorial, Second and State streets. Ceremonies at 9:10 a.m. at memorial; 9:30 a.m. at Greenwood and St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Fifth Street; 10:15 a.m. at St. John’s Cemetery veterans plot. If raining, ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. at National Guard Armory, North Fifth Street. Call from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 610-562-2311 if wishing to participate. Open houses at both posts following ceremonies. Sponsored by The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

• 9 a.m., Minersville. Begins at Little League parking lot, ends at Veterans Memorial, 3 E. Sunbury St., for ceremony. Those not walking in parade assemble no later than 9 a.m. at Memorial Park.

• 8:30 a.m., New Philadelphia. Forms at post office at 8 a.m. Program and ceremony following at Town Square. Guest speaker Magisterial District Justice David A. Plachko.

• 9 a.m., Port Carbon. Followed by services and taps at Veterans Park Gazebo area, near Janet Eiche Library, 111 Pike St.

• 10:30 a.m. Schuylkill Haven. Begins at high school, ends on Parkway where 2024 Hometown Hero Banners “Phase II” dedication will be held at 11 a.m.

• 9:45 a.m., Williamstown. Begins on Vine Street, ends at Veterans Memorial Park for services and MIA Memorial dedication. Parade forms at 9:30 a.m. at VFW parking lot. Light lunch following ceremony in both Williamstown American Legion and VFW canteens. All encouraged to wear and donate toward poppies.

Service

• 11 a.m., Pottsville. At Garfield Square Soldiers Monument. Distinguished speaker Pottsville native Chief Warrant Officer Zachary Reichert. Wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute. Dedication of Hometown Hero banners. In case of rain, ceremony will be held in First United Methodist Church, Garfield Square.

1:30 p.m.: Schuylkill Haven. Veterans of the Vietnam War Inc. Post 29 service at Schuylkill County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, adjacent to First United Church of Christ off Route 61 near entrance to Penn State Schuylkill.
