A school bus driver was allegedly driving with a gun. Hopewell schools have suspended them

HOPEWELL TWP. ― A school bus driver has been suspended as officials investigate accusations that they brought a gun onto their vehicle Thursday morning.

In a letter to parents in the Hopewell Area School District, Superintendent Jeff Beltz said the incident occurred on a bus that was taking students to Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School and Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School. A student reported seeing a revolver fall onto the bus floor from the driver's lap while on the way to the school, with the driver immediately picking up the weapon and keeping it out of sight.

No charges had been filed as of Friday at noon. The driver has not been identified.

No students were threatened or harmed during the incident. In general, Pennsylvania gun laws prohibit the possession of firearms inside school buildings, on school grounds or during the transportation of students.

After the student reported the incident, Beltz said officers from the Hopewell Township Police Department talked to the driver and confirmed to investigators that the gun had fallen to the floor. While talking to these officers, the driver did not have the gun in their possession.

Parents were informed the driver has been suspended indefinitely and the district reports that the driver is facing possible legal action. The school bus has also been taken out of service pending an investigation of the vehicle.
