Scammers are targeting local servicemembers

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The welcome home for returning Navy Sailors comes with more than a big hug. Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is issuing a warning that thieves are preying on Sailors near some of their preferred lending institutions.

Here’s the trap: a service member is in the parking lot when one or more scammers approach with a tall tale that goes something like this: ‘Hey Buddy I’m locked out of my account at the credit union; can I use your phone to get back into my account? My mom needs money for rent. Here’s a twenty for your help.‘ You turn over your phone and with a few clicks the scammers have drained your account.

The scam gets worse. The Navy says most financial institutions will not reimburse for funds that were stolen in phone use scams.

NCIS has these tips:

  • Never give your phone to another person.

  • Never offer financial transaction assistance to persons approaching in a parking lot.

  • Never unlock your phone or financial accounts in the presence of unfamiliar persons

  • Navy officials say If you feel pressured or threatened by the scammers, dial 911.

If you believe you have been targeted or if you fall victim to this scam, immediately contact your local police department to file a report, contact NCIS and your command, and notify your bank.
