2 tornadoes, strong winds, hail rip through Western Pennsylvania

Severe storms spurred a tornado in Washington County Saturday evening, uprooting trees and damaging buildings.

5/12/24 AT 6:00 PM - The National Weather Service has confirmed a brief EF0 tornado in central Fayette County near New Salem.

5/12/24 AT 4:00 PM - The National Weather Service said they have found damage that indicates an EF2 tornado passed through Washington County on Saturday.

11:00 PM - Washington County officials said a church with people inside was hit by a tornado while they were in service. Channel 11 spoke with the people who experienced it.

10:00 PM - Channel 11 obtained video of the moments when a tornado rolled through Washington County on Saturday.

8:45 PM - The National Weather Service has confirmed to Channel 11 that a tornado touched down in Union Township, Washington County. They will be surveying the area on Sunday.

8:30 PM - A mailbox was ripped from its post and trees were uprooted during strong winds on Hedgegrow Drive in Washington County.

7:50 PM - A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for parts of Garrett County. The warning is expected to be in place until at least 8:45 p.m.

7:16 PM - A TORNADO WARNING has been issued for parts of Fayette County. The warning is expected to be in place until 7:45 p.m.

7:15 PM - A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for parts of Fayette, Greene and Washington counties. The warning will be in place until at least 8:00 p.m.

7:00 PM - A tornado has hit part of Allegheny County, officials say. According to the Borough Volunteer Fire Department, a tornado was seen in South Park Township. That tornado warning has since lifted.

6:55 PM - A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for parts of Westmoreland and Fayette counties. The warning is expected to be in place until at least 7:30 p.m.

6:20 PM - A TORNADO WARNING has been issued for parts of Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties. The warning is expected to be in place until at least 6:45 p.m.

6:15 PM - A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for parts of Washington County. The warning is expected to be in effect until at least 7 p.m.

Isolated storms are possible late this afternoon and early this evening, mainly before 8 p.m. Severe storms could bring damaging winds, hail, downpours and an isolated tornado.

A chilly start is expected for Sunday. Wake-up temperatures will be in the 40s. Mother’s Day will be partly to mostly cloudy from late morning through midafternoon, spotty showers can’t be ruled out, but most locations will be dry. Breaks in the clouds for more sunshine could come by dinnertime, highs will reach the mid-60s. Bright and dry Monday, temperatures jump back to the mid to upper 70s.

Rain returns Tuesday with unsettled weather through Wednesday. Drier end of the work week with warmer temperatures on the way.
