The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) and Regina Police Service (RPS) are warning the public about a new text scam based around fake speeding tickets.

The scammers send a text message claiming to be from the "Saskatchewan Traffic Bureau" and saying the target's vehicle has been captured speeding in a designated school zone, police say.

The message asks the target to click a link to avoid going to court.

"Do not click the link or make any payments to this website," SPS said in a news release.

Saskatoon police said they will never send a text message asking for payments of any kind. SPS advised residents to block the number and ignore the text.

Regina police said there are automated speed enforcement cameras in Regina and other areas of Saskatchewan, but that violators are notified by letter, not text message.

Victims of the scam are being asked to report it to police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
