PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WHTM) – In a press conference last week newly minted Philadelphia Eagle Saquon Barkley identified which number he will be wearing for the green and silver.

Barkley will wear No. 26 in his new role with the Eagles, keeping his same jersey number from the New York Giants. The Eagles confirmed Barkley’s new jersey number on Monday.

“From watching from afar, everything (the Eagles are) about, the culture here, the fans here, definitely got super excited about it and I’m just happy to be a part of this organization,” said Barkley. “I’m ready to go.”

Barkley noted that he used to attend the Eagles training camp in Lehigh when he was younger.

The running back noted that he considered using No. 8, but ultimately decided to stick with No. 26.

It was initially announced on Monday that the former Nittany Lion would sign a three-year deal for a $37.75 million contract that could increase to $46.75 million with $26 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Barkley’s maximum average-per-year salary, $15.833 million, is the second highest for a running back in NFL history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Whitehall High School graduate was the top offensive player for the Giants with 962 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Barkley had a 68.3% catch rate for four receiving touchdowns.

Despite missing most of the 2020 season due to injury, Barkley is fourth all-time in rushing yards for the Giants. The 27-year-old Whitehall Township native made two Pro Bowls, rushed for 1,000 yards three times, and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in New York.
