Sandy will buzz with emergency alert test Thursday

SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — Sandy City residents don’t be alarmed. It’s only a test of the emergency alert system.

Sandy City officials said it would be testing its emergency alert system on Thursday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m. The alert system will deliver a text message and an email to all Sandy residents who have signed up to receive the emergency notices.

The alerts are by “opt-in” only and were designed to protect Sandy City residents in the event of an emergency. During the test, residents can expect to receive at least one, and possibly more alerts.

“Whether it’s information about severe weather, a nearby water main break, a fast-moving wildfire, or any local emergency or threat, the communication alerts advise residents as soon as an emergency notification is issued and updated,” said Sandy Public Information Officer Susan Wood in a press release.

Thursday’s test will be held in conjunction with the statewide Great Utah ShakeOut. The “ShakeOut” is an annual event dedicated to refreshing Utahns’ earthquake safety skills by performing drills and reviewing emergency plans.

Following the test of its alert system, Sandy City said it would assess the effectiveness of the emergency messaging and make any necessary updates to its system.
