San Diego River Days underway through May 19

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego River Days kicked off over the weekend with nine days of free activities celebrating the San Diego River.

The 21st annual San Diego River Days is underway through May 19. During the two-weekend celebration of the San Diego River, there will be over 30 free public events for the whole family along the entire length of the 52-mile river.

San Diego launches new program to plant hundreds of trees across the city

The annual celebration offers the chance for the community to learn about and appreciate the San Diego River, according to the San Diego River Park Foundation.

River Days events include hikes, guided tours, nature walks, bike rides, river cleanups, educational activities, opportunities to see and interact with wildlife and much more.

Caltrans to host two ‘Dump Day’ events

To kick off River Days, volunteers on kayaks and at the shore cleaned thousands of pounds of trash from the San Diego River, while river restoration volunteers worked to remove invasive plants from the riverbed, the San Diego River Park Foundation posted on Instagram.

The San Diego River flows from the Cuyamaca Mountains near Santa Ysabel to the ocean.

Craig Gustafson, with Think Blue San Diego, says about 80% of ocean pollution starts inland. Whether you’re in Julian, Santee, El Cajon or La Mesa, the trash you throw outside eventually ends up in the ocean through the rivers.
