San Diegans prepare for rain, possible flooding; where to get sandbags

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — An atmospheric river storm is expected to move into San Diego County overnight Friday into Saturday, bringing heavy rain, high wind and the risk of flooding.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a Pacific storm and atmospheric river to hit the San Diego area Friday night through Sunday.

The National Weather Service reports a Flood Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Sunday afternoon for most of Southern California.

How many rainouts have the Padres had at Petco Park?

A strong Pacific storm will bring moderate to heavy rain, along with scattered showers at times and possible thunderstorms.

Those in flood-prone areas are advised to be prepared and plan ahead in case of flooding. View flood safety tips and resources from the National Weather Service online here.

For those in mountain areas, NWS advises to be alert for rockslides and rocks in the roadways.

The City of San Diego is urging residents to prepare ahead of the storm as up to 2 inches of rain is forecast to fall on the region over the next three days.

The city’s Storm Patrol teams have been out cleaning storm drains and inlets, and sweeping streets to reduce trash and pollutants.

The city says flood-prone roads could be closed ahead of time for residents’ safety.

Those impacted by the Jan. 22 storm and flooding can visit the Mountain View Recreation Center (also the location of the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center) and the Encanto Recreation Center through 7 p.m. Friday for pre-filled sandbags.

Residents and businesses in the City of San Diego can get empty sandbags to protect their homes and property from flooding and erosion at the following locations (limit is 10 per house or business; sand is not provided):

  • Council District 1 – Pacific Beach Recreation Center, 1405 Diamond St.

  • Council District 2 (inland) – North Clairemont Recreation Center, 4421 Bannock Ave.

  • Council District 2 (coastal) – Robb Field Athletic Area, 2525 Bacon St.

  • Council District 3 – Golden Hill Recreation Center, 2600 Golf Course Dr.

  • Council District 4 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center, 6401 Skyline Dr.

  • Council District 5 – Scripps Ranch Recreation Center, 11454 Blue Cypress Dr.

  • Council District 6 – Standley Recreation Center, 3585 Governor Dr.

  • Council District 7 – Allied Gardens Recreation Center, 5155 Greenbrier Ave.

  • Council District 8 – San Ysidro Community Activity Center, 179 Diza Rd.

  • Council District 8 – Southcrest Recreation Center, 4149 Newton Ave.

  • Council District 9 – City Heights Recreation Center, 4380 Landis St.

The City of Encinitas posted on X that free, empty sandbags are available for residents to grab up to 10 each at the Public Works Parking Lot — 160 Calle Magdalena in Encinitas.

Storm warning issued for Tijuana-San Diego region

The City of Oceanside is also preparing for the inclement weather by clearing storm drains and channels. Oceanside residents can pick up sand and 10 free sandbags (bring a shovel) at Moody’s El Corazon Recycling — 3210 Oceanside Boulevard.
