San Angelo man gets 3 years confinement for intoxicated manslaughter

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — A San Angelo man has been sentenced to 3 years in confinement after pleading guilty to committing intoxicated manslaughter in 2020.

Law enforcement was dispatched to United States Highway 67 at 5:50 p.m. on Dec. 14, 2020, in response to a motor vehicle crash. The collision involved a pickup truck and a tractor pulling a grain drill.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Joshua Joseph Corfield. The driver of the tractor, identified as Brett Mohler, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Jesse Smith investigated the collision site and discovered several empty alcohol containers inside Corfield’s vehicle. Corfield’s blood was drawn and set to a TxDPS lab for testing hours after the crash, and blood test results revealed that Corfield had a blood alcohol content level of 0.154.

Corfield, 41, was brought up on an intoxicated manslaughter charge on April 10, 2024. Corfield pled guilty to the charge, and a one-day punishment hearing would result in him receiving a sentence of 3 years confinement in the Institutional Division of the Texas Department of Justice and a mandatory fine of $6,000.

“We hope that this verdict and disposition of the criminal case will begin the healing process for the victim’s family,” the District Attorney’s Office of the 51st Judicial Court said. “Driving while intoxicated can have serious, permanent consequences, and in this case, it resulted in the loss of a loving father, husband and son.”

Under the charge, Corfield could have received a sentence of up to 20 years.

“These cases are difficult for everyone involved. We hope that the verdict sends a message to the community to think twice before getting behind the wheel while intoxicated,” the District Attorney’s Office of the 51st Judicial Court said.
