Salvation Army hosts annual Pancake fundraiser event

Apr. 26—GOSHEN — A time-honored fundraiser returned to the Salvation Army of Goshen Friday.

Capt. Kendra Hixenbaugh, of the Salvation Army, said shortly before 1 p.m. that so far that Pancake Day was "fabulous."

"We've had so many people. We are going to pick up more juice and milk, because it's been so busy and steady all day," Hixenbaugh said.

The menu included sausage, pancakes, milk, juice, coffee and water, courtesy of Hawkins Water Tech. Now in its 61st year, Hixenbaugh said that the event raises operations funds — specifically for helping people with food, rent and utilities. This year's goal is to raise around $80,000 from the 13-hour event, which was set to conclude at 7 p.m.

"We have a senior program as well, which it also benefits," Hixenbaugh said. "We meet three times a week."

The event has been in its current location at the Salvation Army on North Main Street, as well as other other locations before that, including Brethren Church and Plain & Fancy Restaurant.

With 854 people having been served, Hixenbaugh said they were in an early afternoon lull, but normally the event serves about 2,000.

"We'll pick right back up at dinnertime," she said.

Volunteers served in the kitchen, as well as as servers. Attendees included families, a group from Goshen High School and others.

Deb Hartman, with Everence, was a volunteer at the event.

"It was busy this year," she said. "I think more so than last year. The sausage was great."

Chris Martin attended with his wife Gretchen, their daughter Harper, age 4, and Allison Teall, also age 4.

"It's going pretty good," Martin said.
