Salvation Army hopes for funds for unhoused Hagerstown moms

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) — The only shelter for women and children in Hagerstown will have to close next week because of a lack of funding.

The Salvation Army, which runs the shelter on the city’s west side, says the growing demand for the shelter’s services has outpaced the financial resources available.

The nonprofit says it is exploring other options for the displaced families until a fundraising event, scheduled for May, can be held.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army is providing food and clothing vouchers and meals in the community kitchen.

“We’re working with other agencies to be able to relocate them into more suitable situations for a period of time that is safe and secure,” says Major Donald Wilson with the Salvation Army.

On Thursday, the United Way of Washington County released $40,000 in emergency funding which could help shelter the families but those grant dollars will not be available until the end of April.
