Sable Altura first responders who delivered baby on I-70 plan reunion

DENVER (KDVR) — It’s not too common these days for first responders to be the ones delivering newborns, but after April 24, some with Sable Altura Fire Rescue can say they had that experience.

The call was received by 911 dispatchers at about 9 a.m. on April 24 as a couple rushed down Interstate 70 toward a hospital to deliver their new family member, according to the fire department’s press release. The soon-to-be three-member family had made it to milepost 291, but their child was not waiting any longer.

After pulling over to the shoulder and calling 911, the couple began to work with dispatchers to deliver the baby, according to Sable Altura Fire Rescue. The father was instructed by 911 dispatchers on his partner’s care while Sable Altura emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Once crews were on the scene, they reported that they helped the new mother deliver her child and also helped the father cut the umbilical cord. Then, they transported the freshly grown family to the hospital.

To make the memory even more special, the new father was also related to Sable Altura first responders: His dad is the Sable Altura Fire Rescue office manager, and he happened to be working that morning, according to the agency’s release.

The crew that delivered the newborn will reunite with the family and be joined by the 911 dispatchers to award the first responders the “Sable Delivery” award, which recognizes staff who have assisted with field deliveries. The meeting and award ceremony is planned for May 31, and the group will listen to the 911 call audio, among other festivities.
